Does it cost more to move up and down stairs?

Yes and No. We do not have a stair fee, but…

The prices for moving are partly based on time and stairs affect the amount of time it takes to load and unload your belongings. For that reason, your price may see a small increase if you have a larger inventory and you have stairs at your pick-up or drop-off locations.

Moving In And Out Of Apartments

Sometimes customers have stairs at the origin and at the destination. If you are moving from an upstairs apartment to another apartment that is located upstairs, then you will definitely have a longer move than if you were located on the ground floor at both locations.

We always suggest freeing up the parking spaces in front of your apartment buildings to help the move go faster if you are in an apartment building. Small things like this can make a major difference. Especially when we are walking furniture up and down flights of stairs, the closer the truck can get to the stairwell the better.

If we have a “long carry” sometimes called a “long walk” and we are moving items up and down stairs, your move could have hours added because of these obstacles. At Lake City Mover, we are very experienced in moving furniture up and down stairs, through hallways and doorways, and carrying furniture longer distances. We have completed thousands of moves, including hotels and office moves which nearly always involve stairs.

If you are in a more luxury apartment complex there may be an elevator that we can use for moving. This is sometimes a separate elevator known as a freight elevator. There also may be dedicated times for moving in and out of elevators if the building is limited to a single or a few elevators. It is always recommended that the property manager is contacted prior to your moving day to avoid any potential conflicts. If there is no dedicated elevator or use is limited, then we may be forced to use the stairs to gain access to your property.

Moving Up and Down Stairs In Your Home

Multi-level homes come in all shapes and sizes. Many homes with multiple floors have stairwells that are narrow and may have turns with landings that create additional obstacles for our movers.

If your current home or new home has a stairwell or multiple stairwells that we will be using for your move, then you can expect additional time to load, unload and stage your furniture. We will always clear the stairway of any rugs, statues, etc.. and take down any pictures or artwork on the walls. When we arrive on site, our crew leader will survey the property for any obstacles in our pathway and clear the halls to give the movers a safe obstacle free environment.

When we begin moving furniture up and down stairs we will protect your railings with moving pads for additional safety. We may also find it necessary to protect the stairs themselves if we will be using equipment on your stairs. We have neoprene floor runners that can be rolled over your stairs for protection.
